Printed Portfolio Evaluation

My portfolio consists mainly of moving image work; this is because I aspire to be a moving image designer. Starting with my lastminute.com advert, I used this as an example of my work because it is the most recent of my video work and also the most polished, my portfolio then moves onto animation were my last 5 animation briefs are shown, they illustrate the different areas of animation which I am interested in. from stop motion (ITV2 – Ident) to completely computer generated imagery (science museum) and not only the finished results but the process, planning and storyboarding are all key aspects of this kind of work. My portfolio then finishes with a poster and questionnaire example, this is to show that I am a moving image designer at heart but also enjoy occasional print briefs. The questionnaire is also present to show that I enjoy asking questions of the public.
My work is much like the work of Flynn productions, looking through their portfolio and mine there are a few similarities, the most obvious to me is that of time laps editing. They have also used stop motion extensively like in my ITV2 Ident. The actuall production of my ITV 2 ident was inspired by the work of hothead productions. This is the production company, which made the E4 idents, a combination of stop motion, 3D and motion graphics. My itv 2 ident was my 1st attempt at combining 2 types of animation (computer generated moving image and stop motion photography).
I believe my strengths lie in the planning and determination to finish the projects, also in concept and the ability to follow a brief. My production ability is one of my main weaknesses as a designer, although over the past year I have learnt an awful lot about moving image work and the technical side, I still plan for this to be my area of improvement. And I will need to if I plan to do moving image work as a profession.
From this point forward I will be getting involved with as much video and animation work as possible, I wish to practically investigate TV and film title sequences and DVD menus, as these are the most appealing aspect of moving image work to me, other than feature film production. I also plan to learn 3D animation software such as Maya to improve my animation skills and software knowledge.
As my creative practice is rooted firmly in the media, I have decided to focus my dissertation on how specific types of media affect the public, focusing my study on environmentalism in the media today. With the dissertation title of “Environmentalism - a modern media zeitgeist?”.

This video was apparently filmed in one take, with audio being recorded simultaneously with the film. The video features Nyle (www.nyleraps.com) and is produced by Last Pictures (www.last-pictures.com) and 194 Recordings (www.myspace.com/194recordings)
I love the narrative and the overall mood of this video, the way that "the beat builds" is awesome, and love the use of instruments rather than samples.
The spot lighting captures the mood of a recording studio perfectly and finishes with a low key spot light on the artist, blacking out the rest of the room for a really dramatic finish.
I am also a fan of extended shots in general and always impressed at the ones which work without any flaws, something which is very hard to achieve. If this video was done in one take i am incredibly impressed and the producers should be proud as its clear a lot of planning must have gone into pre-production.

Evaluation Year 2 Module 1

Through out this brief I have learnt all about the Print process and different colour models, to the extent that I can recognise methods of printing. And also how to use these methods effectively.
I have found that I like the ability to analyse prints and pick them a part. Knowing what your looking at and thinking of the design process which must have taken place gives the print so much more meaning, especially when looking at colour models as the different types of ink hold such influence on the design.
I took part in a workshop which taught me how to letterpress, were I produced my blog address using this print method. I also learnt the different uses of letterpress. In addition to this I had an induction into screen printing and printed a poster.
Although I didn’t implicate these print methods into my designs in this module I look forward to using them in the future.
I have developed my photography, both of moving people and my work, learning how to take, light and frame photographs. I have also been developing my understanding of type through typography seminars and used what I had learnt through my designs.
This module I have learnt that I enjoy learning skills and practical processes, creating a better understanding of things so that I can pick designs apart to reveal how they were made.
My strengths through this module were my understanding of colour models and print processes.
And I feel I need to improve on my typography and layout. Especially when developing layouts.
If I was to do anything differently next module, it would be to organise my time and work more. I would also develop an even greater understanding of my target audience, which in addition would be defined much earlier.

What is the job of a graphic designer?

I was asked: What is the job of a graphic designer? and what is your price?

I think everyone will have a different answer to this question but in my opinion the job of a graphic designer is to fulfill the brief given to you in the best possible way, always striving for better and better designs. If every designer keeps improving then the world would be massively improved in a design sense. It is not a designers job to turn their nose up at seemingly boring jobs (e.g. dog food) or even just to nock it out as quick as possible to pay the bills. it should be their obligation to try and fulfill the brief with the best possible way in terms of both clarity of message and aesthetic. Whilst doing this designers should always keep in mind the environmental issues of design, as 'we' as designers produce the adverts and packaging etc which surrounds us we should strive to keep it to a minimal, ensuring as little waste as possible and using recycled materials to their full potential.

To the second question "what is my price?" i have thought for a long time that a job pays the bills and you should fulfill any and all requirements of the job (in a design sense only) but when asked if i would have designed the swastika if it was asked of me, or even if i was asked to design something for the BNP or BPP no matter how big/profitable the job i think i would have to refuse.
In the swastika sense that probably would have meant my life, but i honestly couldn't let my work be associated with such a cause.

My only hope is that this job doesn't kill me.

At my tutorial we decided that the brochure name "extreme play" was appealing to the wrong audience, it was too young and needed to invoke nostalgia on an older audience, this led me to look at 80's type.

New Design

In my crit we came to the conclusion that this Design is to boring and the colours too vibrant, the brochure looks like its been made by the council and as a design is just dull, in order to improve it, i had to impress my audience, meaning new photography. i also needed a tag line of some kind to lure people in. and in order to persuade an even older audience i researched 70's fashion and music culture. This was the Result:

I'm layering my text by animating on Photoshop and then changing the composite mode this lets the background footage come past the black, leaving only the words to be seen on top of my original footage.

Here are some of my tests.

I have settled on White text, in order to do this the animation background is black and i change the composite mode to Lighten.

Sketch City is a graffiti drawing event in Manchester, the guys put on a really good night with live music, wooden boards on all the tables and they usually have a good supply of pens too. iv been down a few times and its similar to the Leeds best joined up night at the favishum. They also have a regular appearance of Mr Scruff and Resident DJs Jonny Dub, Neil Trenier and Ryan Hunn.

i always really like the promotional stuff that sketch city use, there have been some great illustrations, and i generally just like the style.

i suggest every one check it out...

What is Graphic Design?

Some people have a very clear definition of what graphic design is.... i am not one of those people, graphic design to me is a world of opportunities, i believe that absolutely anything can be made/designed under the title of graphic design. from advertising to kitchen knives.

The fundamental principle behind graphic design however to me is communication. generally visually communicating to the public whether that be by designing street signs or shaving into someones head.

The conventional ideas of graphic design have always lead me to dwell upon meaning and concept. i find thinking of the appropriateness of everything very stressful and prefer when designers just do what they like. literally design for designs sake.

I guess if we all carried on just designing what we wanted for ourselves we would all be out of a job

Iv still got quite a bit to do, and really need to learn how to put descent moving text into my frames but i had a go at After Effects today and bloody hell it was confusing lol. For the rest of the night i plan to film 3 more shots and start editing them, hopefully it will all go to plan....... wish me luck and enjoy the video so far:

Since the last installment i have added the animated section which introduces Morrisons, i feel that this runs a lot smoother than jumping straight into stop motion photography. i have also re-shot the free software section and changed the transition idea from removing the text from the screen to removing the text and then putting it back and the text has changed. iv also neatened up some general editing.

I have been given a brief to re-design a magazine page layout.
In order to do this I had to deconstruct the existing page (page 36 Death of analogue – WTF Magazine).
My page was structured with 6 columns and 4mm gutters. I used the original grid layout of the magazine so that it would be suitable to replace the old design.

I have removed “analogue at a glance” because it is the start of the article. I wanted to improve its impact by giving it a title page style, and felt that the section “Analogue at a Glance” would be best suited on the next page with the “Digital Switchover” section…
The reaper was deleted because it was cheesy and I thought just leaving his hand resting on top of the TV was enough to get the concept across.

The Song featuring a fiddle battle between a man (Johnny) and the devil. the animation of this video is impeccable especially for the type of video it seems that most animated music videos or at least animated sections of music videos lack the clean professionalism of block buster animation which this captures. not only is it really well done but i found it hilarious.

I found this in grafik magazine, i always like work like this, the attack at corporations or just at humanity as a whole in a protesting manner inspires me.
Graphics in general is communicating in a visual way, i think that if anything is worth communicating it should be messages like these, things that build awareness and have real meaning and morality behind them. telling people the truth about were things come from, who its hurting and who is gaining from them gives people a better understanding of how the world works. If you can do this in a visual way that captures, or even confuses people enough to read further into it then you should, there are a lot of things wrong with the world and pointing them out to people can be alot of fun too.

I was asked to illustrate 3 similar stories from The Guardian, The Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror, on the 22nd October 2007. The story i chose was the use of batons in prisons on 16year old offenders. The Daily Mail made the prison officers out to be out numbered and threatened by the prisoners. The Daily Mirror made the guards seem to be overly violent and demanding. Finally the Guardian simply posed the question do they really need batons? From this experience i have decided to never read an opinionated newspaper again as the story can sway so drastically from one to the next.

From this we had to take the style and opinion of one of the newspapers and develop the story into an informative poster design. I chose the guardian as it was neutral and like me didn't seem to know what would be the best out come. Through my development i neutralized everything so that the out come had no opinion what so ever, keeping only the font from the guardian (Times New Roman) and these were the out come:

Here are the 100 pockets which i am using as a starting point for my book, i have simply asked people if i could take a picture of what they have in their pockets, it was interesting to find the diversity of content and also how unwilling some people are to help. Life is a Laugh

Life is a Laugh was a Platform for art installation on the London Underground,created by Brian Griffiths along with a 24foot panda head, caravan, mattresses, makeshift ramps and stunt hoops came its very own advertising campaign by Fraser Muggeridge. The Poster and leaflet designs made to accompany the installation work within the London Underground's brand guidelines do the opposite to the installation, a boring and timeless design uses irony to illustrate the humor of the piece.

Fraser Muggeridge quotes:
"I had a great title to work with (i.e. Life Is a Laugh), so by doing a poster that was nearly boring this would be more amusing, more of a laugh-and people would notice it more by its blandness and get interested in the project"

"It conforms to all the guidelines and i made it look slightly old and grubby, so that you're not quite sure what era it dates from. a bit like Brian's (Brian Griffiths) work"

This video is amazing, they have used the technique of extending the shutter speed of the camera and then literally drawing in the picture with light. This idea is used far to much for my liking, its taking the fundamental idea of photography (capturing light) and just extending it so obviously if the light source moves in the frame it would create a light stream across the picture. I feel that this is used far to much, especially in A Level work. Its a gimmick that unless used properly like in this case should not be allowed in the world of design. Fortunately the accuracy of repetition from frame to frame is very impressive. They have obviously spent a lot of time reviewing the shots in order to make the best possible result.

Ashley Wood has illustrated many graphic novels (comics), his "Zombies VS Robots" writen by Chris Ryall is one of his newest projects, and although very dark and rough holds some of the best illustrations iv seen. His style reminds me of Dave McKeans work on Arkham Asylum.

Although some may find his work repetitive i always enjoy it because you can pretty much guarantee it featuring 1 or more of the following:

1. Robots.

2. Zombies.

3. A battle between Robots and Zombies.

4. Some breath taking art work depicting the most horrible things.

Previously I was a student at Winstanley College (wigan/manchester) I first started doing Art, Graphics, Media Studies and Photography at A level and then Joined the Foundation Course.

This course provided me with one of the best years of my life. I was working with some amazing people and left with a number of great friends who i never wish to lose. I had such a great time on the course I based my Final Major Project on the day to day lifestyle of the Winstanley Art Department Inhabiter's (AKA Foundation Students)

I only hope that i can carry on enjoying my work as much as i did making this.
